2012: Challenges and Changes

Well here I am, two weeks into the New Year and just now writing a New Year’s blog post. I’m a bit behind but what else is new? I didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions because I’ve never stuck one out for a whole year in my entire life and I didn’t think it was very practical for me since I’ve recently been feeling like I never finish anything. Here’s one thing I did finish though, the very long year of 2012. Not only did I finish it but I finished strong which wasn’t always what I thought would happen. As the title of my post indicates, this past year was full of changes and challenges and lots of other fun (and not so fun) things.
Change is not something I particularly enjoy. To me, its stressful and confusing and I find myself trying so hard to figure out how to adapt to the changes that a miss the beauty and the good things change can bring. One of the toughest changes I faced this year was my dearest, oldest, and closest friend, we’ll call her H, going away to college. I helped her move into her dorm room at the end of the summer and I cried the entire two hour drive home, I felt like I had left a piece of me behind as soon as I drove off campus. I wasn’t sure how I was going to handle being so far away from the friend I think of as a sister, who knows me better than anyone else, who showed up randomly at my house and made herself at home. I was afraid of the changes in our relationship being apart for so long might cause. But you wanna know a secret? God puts people in your life for a reason and if he wants them to stay there they will. I’m typing this blog post in my darling friend’s dorm where I’m visiting for the weekend because we’ve stayed close through H’s entire first semester; God is so very good to me! Bonus: H made the Dean’s list her first semester, I’m super proud of her! :)
One change that came this year that I accepted readily was the blessing of a new, sweet friend. I found a kindred spirit in YaYa when she took a leap of faith and moved across the country to take a job near my hometown. When I met her through a mutual friend I had no idea that she and I would become such close friends so quickly! She is now a sister to me and I can't even imagine what it would be like if I hadn't met her this summer. YaYa is one of the biggest blessings of my entire year and I can’t wait to see what else God has planned for our friendship. I’ve only known her for 6 months but she is the kind of friend you feel like you’ve known your entire life. Both of these girls, and all of my other friends, have filled 2012 with so many memories and have helped me to realize changes aren’t all bad. Lots of other things filled up my year in 2012, lots of ups and downs, lots of tears and laughter, lots of joys and sorrows, and I can only hope 2013 will be as wonderful!
